Our operation
was founded in 1935 by Marion Nicholas. The farm began with only
15 cows. Gary entered the operation full-time in 1958. Marion
and Gary proceeded to purchase purebred Hereford females over
the years. The use of polled bulls became prevalent in the mid
'70's with 90% of the herd being polled today.
In the fall of
1995 we bought our first Gelbvieh cattle as somewhat of an
experiment in a second breed. The Gelbvieh breed impressed us
with their ability to combine so many traits into one package
that the other exotics did not. These traits included growth,
muscling, milking ability, lean meat yield, early sexual
maturity and fertility, all combined in a relatively easy
fleshing package.
The McCoy
breeding program has been based on production related selection
criteria right from day one. The focus of our breeding program
has been to breed multi-trait cattle excelling in maternal and
performance traits that are put together in a sound easy
fleshing package.
The goal of
our program has been to produce bulls equipped with the
essentials to create value in
progressive commercial cross-breeding programs. As our program
has developed and matured we have put more and more focus on
managing our herd with minimal input as we realize our customers
will need to be low cost producers to be
successful in the future.
